Starting early from Bangalore, my journey to Chikmagalur was a smooth and scenic one. The drive, which took about 5 to 6 hours, was filled with winding roads, coffee plantations, and rolling hills. As I drove out of the city and into the countryside, the landscape changed dramatically, making the journey feel like a part of the adventure itself.

Along the way, I made two significant cultural stops: Belur and Halebidu—two gems that are absolutely worth visiting.
Chikmagalur: A Coffee Lover’s Paradise
After leaving the historical sites behind, I continued my journey to Chikmagalur. The last leg of the drive, about 1.5 to 2 hours, was through dense coffee estates, and the sight of sprawling plantations dotted with small cottages was pure bliss.

The cool weather and misty hills greeted me as I entered Chikmagalur, making me realize why this hill station is often called the Coffee Land of Karnataka.

Stay at Hosteller Chikmagalur: A Homely Escape in the Coffee Land
As soon as I arrived at The Hosteller Chikmagalur, I was welcomed by its friendly staff and laid-back vibe. The property is nestled in a lush green area, offering a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The air was cool, the surroundings were peaceful, and the stunning views of the hills created the perfect backdrop for my stay. It combines the warmth of a homestay with the social vibe of a hostel, making it a perfect choice for those seeking budget-friendly accommodation without compromising on comfort.

Hirekolale Lake – A Quiet Scenic Spot
Next, we drove to Hirekolale Lake, a peaceful man-made lake nestled amidst the coffee plantations. With the backdrop of Mullayanagiri hills, it’s a postcard-worthy spot, especially during sunset. The area is not commercialized, which adds to its charm—perfect for some quiet moments or candid photos.

Mullayanagiri Hill – The Highest Peak of Karnataka
Our first major stop was Mullayanagiri, standing tall at 6,330 feet. The drive up the winding mountain roads was an experience in itself, offering stunning views of the Western Ghats. Once we reached the base, a short yet steep trek took us to the summit. The cool breeze, panoramic views, and the small temple at the top made it all worth it. It’s the best place in Chikmagalur to soak in 360-degree views of misty hills and valleys.

Baba Budangiri Cave: A Sacred Fusion of Faiths in Chikmagalur
The Baba Budangiri Cave, located atop the Baba Budangiri hills in Chikmagalur, Karnataka, is a unique spiritual site where Hindu and Muslim devotees converge. The cave houses a shrine dedicated to Dattatreya, a revered Hindu deity, and is also associated with Baba Budan, a 17th-century Sufi saint credited with introducing coffee to India.

Jhari Falls – The Buttermilk Falls
Known as the Buttermilk Falls, Jhari Falls was a refreshing surprise. After a bumpy jeep ride through dense coffee estates (you can’t take your car all the way), we reached the falls. Water cascades down in a foamy, milky stream—hence the nickname. The sound of the falls and the mist in the air make it a soothing spot to relax.

Mahatma Gandhi Park – A Green Retreat in the Heart of the City
Located in the northern part of Chikmagalur, Mahatma Gandhi Park (also known as Rathnagiri Bore Park) offers a serene escape amidst lush greenery, making it a favorite spot for both locals and tourists. The Rathnagiri Express is a miniature toy train that offers a delightful ride through the scenic landscapes of Mahatma Gandhi Park. The train ride takes visitors through various parts of the park, offering views of attractions like the lotus pond, Nehru Rose Garden, and the lush greenery surrounding the area.

Yagachi Water Sports – Adventure on the Lake
On our way back, we made a quick detour to Yagachi Dam, located near Belur, about an hour from Chikmagalur. We did speed boating. The speed boat I boarded was sleek and powerful, and as the boat revved up and cut through the calm water, the thrill instantly kicked in. The boat skimmed across the reservoir at top speed, with the cool spray of water hitting my face as we cruised over the surface. The adrenaline rush was unmatched! As we zoomed across the water, I couldn’t help but marvel at the breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and the pristine water.

As my time in Chikmagalur came to an end, I couldn’t help but reflect on what an incredible experience it had been. From the mist-covered hills and coffee plantations to the rich cultural history of places like Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri, every moment in this beautiful hill station left me in awe.

Adios Chikmagalur! Until next time.
