Picnic, peace and the Cauvery: A day in Bheemeshwari

Tucked away along the banks of the Cauvery River, Bheemeshwari is the kind of place where time slows down, birds sing louder than traffic, and the only WiFi you need is with nature. Around 100 km from Bangalore, this hidden gem is perfect for a day picnic or even a peaceful weekend getaway.

The Journey: Forest Roads & Morning Chatter

We left Bangalore early, around 6:30 AM ready to escape the city hum. As we neared Kanakapura Road, the surroundings turned greener and calmer. The last stretch, with winding roads through forested areas, was especially lovely — monkeys casually chilling by the road and birds flying low across the trees.

Enroute Bheemeshwari
Arriving in Bheemeshwari

By 8 AM, our stomachs were already hinting at mutiny. So we pulled over at a charming local joint— a no-frills place that served up the softest idlis, crispy vadas, and steaming hot filter coffee that could wake anyone up properly.

Breakfast Stop

Bheemeshwari is part of a protected forest area, nestled between the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary. You don’t need to go deep into the wild to feel its magic — the river flows wide and lazy here, surrounded by hills and dense woods.

There’s a designated picnic area near the Jungle Lodges zone, with safe spots for sitting, playing, and relaxing. You’ll see families, friend groups, and even solo travelers setting up for the day.

A beautiful place for a picnic
The Picnic Vibe

We picked a shady spot under tall trees, right next to the river. Laid out a mat, brought out the food, and just…chilled.

Our lunch menu was classic: sandwiches, fruit, maggi and egg, and of course — plenty of juices. There’s something about eating outside that makes food taste better, right?

Food in picnics always taste so much better

We spent hours:

  • Chatting and laughing
  • Skipping stones in the river
  • Watching fish jump and kingfishers dive
  • Taking naps under the trees

No phone calls. No deadlines. Just stillness and the sound of the water.

River Time: Nature’s Spa

There’s a shallow stretch near the bank where the current is soft and the water’s crystal clear. We took off our shoes and walked right in, cool water wrapping around our ankles, pebbles underfoot, and dragonflies dancing nearby.

Cauvery riverside

Some of us sat on half-submerged rocks, legs dangling in the flow. Others just floated with closed eyes, the river quietly doing its magic. It wasn’t about swimming — it was about soaking in nature. Literally.

The mix of sun on our skin and river water on our feet felt better than any spa session.

Spending the late afternoon under the sun near the river

Bheemeshwari reminded me that the best escapes don’t need passports or plans — just nature, a river, and people you can laugh with. If you ever feel the urge to disconnect and dip your feet into something real, head here.
