From stars to sunrise: Kodachadri Trek with friends

There’s something magical about starting a trek in the dead of night. The stars above, the silence of the forest, the sound of footsteps and soft giggles — it felt like we had the world to ourselves.

Kodachadri Hills

We woke up groggy but excited at around 3:30 AM in our homestay near Nittur. Quick coffee shots, layered up against the morning chill, and we were out by 4:00 AM — headlamps glowing, shoes crunching through gravel, hearts pumping with anticipation.

The trail began quietly, with only our torches lighting the way. The forest was dense and mysterious, and every sound felt amplified — rustling leaves, creaking branches, distant owl calls.

The trail

It was a surreal experience — the kind that makes you whisper even when there’s no one around. We walked single file, watching our steps and occasionally glancing up to catch glimpses of the stars between the trees.

The night trek was challenging but serene. It was just us, our breath visible in the cold air, and the promise of a sunrise waiting at the top.

We made it to the summit just as the sky began to shift — from navy blue to a gentle peach-pink. The wind was strong, the air sharp, and all of us stood there in silence, watching the sun rise above the Western Ghats.

Break of dawn

The clouds floated below us like a sea of cotton. The Sarvajna Peetha temple stood quiet and powerful at the edge of the cliff. It was one of those rare, grounding moments where no one checks their phone, no one speaks — you just feel.

We took photos, of course, but nothing captured the peace of that first light hitting our tired, happy faces.

Once the sun was up, we wandered around the top, explored the temple, and perched on random rocks to eat the snacks we’d packed.

There’s no luxury like food after a tough hike and a spectacular sunrise. We sat there laughing, sharing stories, and already planning our “what’s next.”

After hanging around the summit for a while, we opted for the jeep ride down — an absolutely wild, bumpy adventure through dense jungle roads. If the trek was peaceful, this ride was the opposite — loud, bumpy, and filled with screams every time we hit a rock (which was every 5 seconds).

Jeep rides were epic

Still, it was the perfect chaotic end to a calm and beautiful climb.

Back at the homestay, we changed into dry clothes, drank hot tea, and lay on the grass like we’d conquered Everest. Legs sore, hearts full.

What made it special?

  • The quiet of the night trail
  • Watching the forest wake up
  • That shared sense of achievement
  • The conversations that only happen after 5 AM treks

It’s funny how something as simple as a trek can leave such a lasting mark on you. Kodachadri wasn’t just about reaching a summit or checking off another travel list item — it was a full experience, layered with emotion, connection, and a sense of awe that’s hard to describe.

A first with colleagues and such a memorable experience

Waking up before dawn, trekking under starlight, and watching the world slowly come alive — it felt like we were part of something ancient and eternal. The silence of the forest at 4 AM is something I’ll never forget. It’s peaceful, almost sacred. No notifications, no distractions — just breath, steps, and nature whispering around you.
